To recover the Notebook stolen by Mello, Kira surrenders his own to the headquarters, which in exchange agrees to a forceful operation against the criminal gang. Ryuk participates in the plan and convinces Sidoh not to inform Mello and his accomplices, promising that he will then receive his Notebook back. To ensure the operation's success, Soichiro Yagami exchanges his eyes, thus discovering Mello's real name. He tells Light this, but without writing it in the notebook, hoping to convince Mello to surrender. Light's father is instead mortally wounded in a shootout, and Mello escapes after blowing up his hideout.
