Zerocalcare - No Sleep Till Shengal - It

When no one speaks... when no one looks, massacres happen.

In the spring of 2021, Zerocalcare traveled to Iraq to visit the Yazidi community of Shengal, threatened by international tensions and protected by Kurdish militias, and to document their living conditions and struggle. The journey proved difficult, as the Italian delegation was repeatedly turned back at various checkpoints controlled by the various political and military forces that shared control of Iraqi soil. This comic book is a snapshot of a specific geopolitical moment, in which a handful of people opposed the excessive power of those who labeled any attempt at resistance "terrorism," while power structures slowly shifted, and the dream of democratic confederalism in a too-often forgotten corner of Mesopotamia risked fading forever, amid the deafening indifference of the West.
